Allan Kaprow

leave a comment »

‘Objects of every sort are materials for the new art: paint, chairs, food, electric and neon lights, smoke, water, old socks, a dog and a thousand other things.’

!957 Kaprow began creating enviromental works that demands audience participation and this integration of space, materials, time and space.

18 Happenings in 6 Parts

Happenings is a non-verbal theatrical production that ignores stage-audience structure as well as the usual plot or narrotive line of traditional theatre.

The performers are considered as objects involved within an overall designed enviroment, timing, sound, colour and light. Found enviroments are often used and built upon but the events are not casually arrived at, nor are they entirely accidental or spontaneous.

Properties and Relations

Properties, attributes that can be experienced:- colour, weight, smell, taste, location

Relations, to other object:- size, description, location ie. on a table, in a room

Objects manifest themselves as clusters of their properties

Are Objects just a collection of properties or are objects separate from those properties?
