Thinking about public and private persona’s and why we have them, does everybody have them. Thinking about masks and the idea that we are hiding ourselves. What it is that we are hiding?

3D Knitted Sculpture

While knitting i thought about barriers  and why we create them. Mental, physical and emotional. Barriers that aren’t necessary there but we create to stop ourselves from progressing forward possibly through fear.

I thought about journey and getting from one point to another and the barriers we experience in between.

As the work is created for the Royal Edinburgh hospital i thought about the journey being made by the patients back in society and finding our place. I also thought about the families and their journey into the hospital.
I would like to continue on with this  project of knitted walls which will take the form of a maze, the idea that we have  created the barrier but can also destroy it. I used rope as it seemed the best material for outside use, however i also experimenting with wire and fishing line.

Knitting

Starting knitting not really sure why but the process was really theraputic which was quite appropriate. I began thinking about the personal and social connotations that come along with knitting. And decided that there more in the knitting than using the springs,tubing or pumps. This made it become to machincal and not very sympathetic.

The knitting seemed the most appropriate way to covey my idea. I decided i still wanted to keep the movement of water but more as a spiritual reference than it being pumped around through the sculpture. I’m thinking about possibly making knitted containers.

I wanted to start knitting on a large scale, so i researched where i could get rope and made large knitting needles.
